How to Replace Springs and Snubber Ring on Maytag Washer
Can my washer be fixed cheaply?
I have a Maytag Performa 3200. It goes off-balance a lot, which I understand is a problem with the snubber pad and costs a lot of money to fix. It is still usable by frequently checking to see if off balance, though, and money is tight. It also makes a squeaking noise when spinning, which I understand is a fixable problem with the water pump.
The problem is, today, it stopped spinning entirely and began leaking small amounts of water on the floor. The water drains out of it like normal, but the tub never begins to spin, leaving soaking wet laundry. Attempting to run the spin cycle results in creaking noises which become loud banging noises within thirty seconds or so. The tub does not spin while it is making these noises.
So, is this a problem that can be fixed easily by my father (a professional handyman) or do we need to buy a new washer?

Our Amana was acting up and I started into it ('cause I can fix anything!).

It ended up that after playing with it for many hours, days, I made it worse...we got an Amana guy in here and he showed us plain and simple

that even before I messed with it, that it was beyond hope.

The bearings on the base of the drum were worn and the only way to fix it was to get a new drum and an adapter.... and also somekind of drum balancer was also worn. Labor and parts - $300. So-o-o-o!! What do you do?! We got a new Amana, so hopefully IT will last another 12 years....nice new features anyhow.

They don't last forever. Steel wears out. Especially the steel that's produced nowadays. Your water pump is not getting any better.

Going to fix yours? You can try, but you'll probably going to end up to have to get a new one. And remember of course, you get what you pay for.

Look at Sear's Kenmore. They're made by Whirlpool in Evansville, IN. Probably one of the best. And seriously, Sears was looking for a superior product for their stores --- for the Sears reputation. So they contracted with Whirlpool, to slap the Kenmore name on a bunch for them. And then Whirlpool sells THEIR name too. Same exact thing.
